Regional Partners

Jason Witten SCORE Foundation

Through a $100,000 signature partnership with Dallas Cowboy tight end Jason Witten and his SCORE Foundation, The Allstate Foundation is providing financial literacy programs for seven shelters throughout Texas. Jason Witten grew up in a home where domestic violence was a constant factor. When he was nine years old, his mother left the home and took her young sons to live with her parents. Jason credits his success as a football player and as a man to the positive guidance he received from his grandfather.

In keeping with Jason's vision of providing positive male role models for children in shelters, The Allstate Foundation funding provides for one male staff member to work at each of the seven shelters during the afternoons. The male mentor spends dedicated time with the children after school, playing games and teaching healthy interaction. Just as important, these male staff members work with adult shelter clients on the financial empowerment curriculum created by The Allstate Foundation and the National Network to End Domestic Violence. Clients work through the modules of this curriculum individually and in groups, until they are ready to begin their safe and financially independent lives.

For this innovative partnership, The Allstate Foundation and the Jason Witten SCORE Foundation were both honored in 2008 as winners of the "Thirty Stars over Texas," an award given to leaders in the fight against domestic violence by the Texas Coalition on Family Violence.

Texas Advocacy Project

The Texas Advocacy Project is a full-service family law firm that has provided free, specialized legal services for survivors of domestic violence throughout the state of Texas for more than 25 years. Because financial independence and access to affordable legal services are crucial keys to starting a safe new life, The Allstate Foundation and The Project have partnered to provide both. In addition to direct and assisted pro se legal services, a free legal counseling hotline and regular attorney office hours in many shelters around the state, lawyers for The Project teach financial literacy to clients, giving them hope for the future. This economic education is made possible through signature grant funding worth nearly $200,000 since 2007 and the financial empowerment curriculum created by The Allstate Foundation and the National Network to End Domestic Violence. The lessons within the curriculum include basic tools for beginning a financially independent life, along with information geared specifically for battered women who may still be in danger from their abusers.

University at Buffalo

As an urban public research university, the University at Buffalo is committed to marshaling collaborative expertise in research, teaching, and service to advance the public good. Community engagement is a guiding priority of the University’s strategic plan, UB 2020, and creating resilient communities and sustainable economies is a particular area of concern.

The Allstate Minority and Women Emerging Entrepreneurs Program provides a unique avenue for working to build economic empowerment for domestic violence survivors, and the University at Buffalo offers a wide range of complementary expertise. UB’s highly respected Schools of Law, Social Work, and Medicine are partners in the Family Justice Center of Erie County, which is a “one-stop” facility for women and families affected by domestic violence, supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. The Family Justice Center has indicated its willingness to partner with the CEL to implement the proposed new programs. In addition, local and state government officials have indicated that they would be pleased to assist with outreach.

A survivor: "Believe everything happens for a reason and when things are meant to be it will happen. Like the scholarship fund, sends me a sign that I deserve a chance to go far in life regardless of my past situations and life experiences. This fund has given me an opportunity to restart my life in a positive way and hope for the better as I move on with my life!"
